Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. In music, film and television Queen Latifah is the recipient of 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and nominations for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. Her parents divorced around the age of ten. Latifah grew up in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. When she was 8, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah that means tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah's 5'10" height allowed her to be a formidable athlete in high school. She sang the song"Home" from The musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah became part of with the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of a team of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
